From Director’s Desk

This is a story 12 years back, when as a Junior Research Fellow, I was pursuing my PhD in Social Sciences at Jadavpur University, Kolkata. It was during my very first field visit for the empirical study on Women and Education in remote villages of Jalpaiguri district . I was not given entry into the village by the community due to some unknown reason. To my utter surprise, I came to know that the villagers might loose their BPL status as ration cards were prepared by the local Panchayats during those days. They complained that the last household survey done by some female official turned many BPL card holders to APL by manipulation. But gradually rapport was built with the community people and I could gain their confidence and carry forward my field work. It was then when the youth surrendered me about their vulnerability of being forced migrant laborers as they had no livelihood options in their locality. There in the foreign lands they were marginalized, yet they had to sustain their work to earn a livelihood. Also in the villages the number of dropout children were high and the first and foremost reason being their first generation learners and Rajbanshi being their mother tongue. In the schools they have to follow Bengali text books which are beyond their under standing . This is where Aaradhya Foundation was conceived and delivered by initiating programs like remedial coaching to the local community children preventing school dropouts and providing various awareness generating campaigns .
